The short version
Your camera and microphone are read on your own device. Video and audio are not uploaded, recorded or stored. When you choose to send a result, a small set of numbers and your name or role goes to the producer who set up the event. Results are deleted 7 days after the event is created. A link can also arrive with a name already filled in (a producer using Eyset Rundown can send one); that name is only put in the name box and is not stored until you choose to send a result.
Where this site lives
Eyset Check is at check.eyset.com. It used to be at eyset.com, and links made there still work: a request for an old Check address on eyset.com is answered with a redirect to this site. In that request, eyset.com receives the path and the query of the link (for a presenter link, the event code and any name in it), and never the part after the # sign, which is where a board key is. eyset.com now belongs to Eyset Rundown, a separate product with its own privacy page, run by the same person on Cloudflare. Rundown keeps you signed in with a cookie. The cookie is set for eyset.com only, so a browser does not send it to this site, and this site cannot read it. This site sets no cookies of its own.
What is measured on your device
After you press Start check, the page reads your camera and microphone in your browser. It measures:
- where your eyes sit in the frame, your headroom, how centred you are, your face size and the camera angle;
- the brightness of your face and of the background;
- the microphone's background noise, your speech level and any clipping;
- the round-trip time to this site, and how much it varies, for a rough view of your connection.
The camera and microphone stop as soon as the check finishes. You can choose which camera and microphone to use, and the choice is held only in the page and is not stored. No frames, thumbnails or audio clips are captured.
What is sent when you press Send to producer
Only the following is sent to this site:
- the name or role you typed, up to 60 characters;
- the overall result, and the result for eyeline, framing, light, audio and connection (each green, amber or red);
- a set of numbers from the measurements: eyeY, faceTop, centreOffset, faceHeight, eyeToChin, faceLuma, bgLuma, backlightRatio, noiseFloorDb, speechRmsDb, peakDb, medianRttMs, jitterMs and pingFailures;
- a coarse browser and operating system family, such as Chrome/macOS, with no version numbers;
- a verification token from Cloudflare Turnstile, which shows the check was passed. The token is requested while the check runs, and a fresh one is requested if the first has expired or been used;
- the event code, which is part of the address the result is sent to.
The connection checks send only a sequence number and a timestamp, in the address of each request. As with any page, the browser's usual request headers go with every request. This site does not store them.
What is stored
For each event: the optional title, the time it was created and the time it expires, and the board key. For each result: the name or role, the overall and per-check results, the measurement numbers listed above, the coarse browser family, and the time the result arrived.
What is not stored
This site does not store IP addresses, full user agent strings, cookies or any account details. It does not store any identifier beyond the name or role you typed. The site does not set cookies and does not use local storage. Cloudflare's Turnstile widget may set cookies of its own on Cloudflare's domain, under Cloudflare's privacy policy.
Creating an event
When you create an event, the optional title and a Turnstile token are sent. The event has two links. The presenter link is for presenters. The board link is for you, and it includes a secret key after the # sign in the address. Anyone with the board link can see results, so keep it private.
The board page sends that key to this site when it refreshes, and when the producer deletes the event, so that only the event's owner can read or delete it. The key is stored in our database in the same form it was issued.
The producer board shows the measurement numbers listed above for each presenter, to the producer, along with each check's result and the time the result arrived. It does not show video, audio or images, because none are sent.
The producer can download the results as a CSV file at any time from the board. The file is created in the producer's own browser and is not sent to this site or anywhere else.
The producer can delete the event and all of its results at any time from the board. Deletion takes effect straight away, and the results cannot be recovered afterwards.
How long it is kept
Each event, its board key and all of its results are deleted by a daily job, which runs at 03:17 UTC, once seven days have passed since the event was created. An event can therefore remain for up to about a day after the seven days are up. If the producer deletes the event from the board first, it is removed at once.
Services we use
- Cloudflare Workers runs the site and its API. Cloudflare receives each request as the host of this site, as with any site it hosts, and its own privacy policy applies.
- Cloudflare D1 stores events and results for up to seven days.
- We count page views with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which uses no cookies and doesn't track you across sites.
- Cloudflare Turnstile checks that a person is sending a result or creating an event. Its script is loaded from challenges.cloudflare.com when the create-an-event page opens, and when a presenter's check starts on a valid event link, so that sending is quick. Cloudflare receives the visitor's IP address and browser details when that script runs, as it does for any page that uses Turnstile. This site does not pass the address on to Turnstile.
When you click into the name field or start typing in it, the page starts downloading the face-detection model and the WebAssembly it runs on. Both are served from this site. Your camera and microphone still start only after you press Start check. Apart from Cloudflare Web Analytics, described above, there are no third-party trackers or analytics scripts on the pages.
Your choices
You can decline to press Start check, or close the page at any time. The camera and microphone are released when the check finishes or when you leave the page. You can press Send to producer only if you want the producer to see the result.
The practice page at /try runs the same check, sends nothing, and does not load Turnstile.
